Cairn // vol 14: losing my mind a little + 2018 wind down.

Okay, not really. But the last month has been insane. It’s been a whirlwind of new jobs, new projects, new goals, new clients, and dangit, I need a nap. I’ve consumed more eggnog chais than is healthy for a human being, and the morning crew at Bruegger’s doesn’t even ask me what I want anymore. I have managed to lose the cat’s collar and my key to the laundry room. It’s a wonder I haven’t set anything on fire.

MORNING BUZZ
I’ve been learning a hard lesson that I feel like it could be bad business to talk about publicly, but vulnerability, honesty and connection are core values of what I do, so here goes. Just before the holidays I found myself missing the barista life, and figured that it’s never bad to have a little extra cash. I applied for a position at Scooters, and was hired immediately. I have been working there for a month, and its been extremely hard on me. I made myself a promise that if my business starts to take a hit I have to give the job up. Over the past month, I have struggled to stay on top of my work. I have also grown to adore the people I work with and working behind an espresso bar does something supernatural in my soul. I just love it. I’m currently feeling burnout at a crossroads. I have made the decision to cut back my hours to one shift per week. I cannot sacrifice my business and the clients I love for a minimum wage job, no matter how much I love it. This way I can have the best of both worlds. I still get to work in a coffee shop, and I don’t have to sacrifice my business.

SHE SAID YES!
I have a goal of signing 3 weddings next year. I have already signed one. Johnny and Megan rock my world. They are so fun, and so relaxed! I did their engagement photos and have had a great time getting to know them!

I seriously cannot get enough of these two. Megan is really fun and relaxed and I feel like she’s my people. She gets me. Johnny is really quiet, but you can tell that he’s just got a heart of gold and he is crazy about Megan. I really enjoy spending time with them and that’s exactly the kind of client I want to serve. As for these photos, its hard to say which is my favorite. Can you really choose just one?

2019 PLANNING
For next year I will continue to grow my business. I’d like to second shoot 10 weddings and shoot three of my own. I think that even as I book my own wedding clients, it’s important for me to make time and space in my schedule for the other photographers in my community. Even if I’m shooting 20 weddings a year, I still want to make myself available to serve other photographers. I’m never too good to serve my community. This is how we create a culture of collaboration over competition.

REMAINDER OF 2018
I will be out of the office from Friday, December 21, through Tuesday, January 1, 2019. If you need something during that time, please know that I’m not ignoring you, I’m just taking some time to relax after kind of an insane year! I will get back to you as soon as I can on January 2.

THANK YOU
I want to say thank you to all of my clients and colleagues. You have made this rather difficult year so much easier. I have enjoyed serving you and working with you on the things you love. I’ve been really fortunate to meet so many wonderful people in my community, many who have become my friends. I’m hoping for more of the same next year! Last but not least, thank you to all the people who take the time to read this. It means a lot that anyone comes over to my little corner of the internet and checks out what I’m up to!

Much love, happy holidays,

—emma
