12 Unity Ceremony Ideas Your Guests Won't Forget

We’ve all probably been to multiple weddings where there was some sort of ritual that symbolized unity between the couple. In my almost-decade of shooting weddings, the two most common unity ceremonies I see are sand pouring and a unity candle. In that time, I have also seen some unity ceremonies that range from simply different to a little out there. These are 12 of my favorite unity ceremonies.

Handfasting
If you have Celtic roots, as many Americans do, this tradition celebrates and symbolizes the binding of two lives in love.

Perform a Duet
If you have a strong musical inclination, whether you are a vocalist, a string player, or a wind player, a duet can be an enjoyable way for both your guests and you to celebrate your union.

Glass Pouring
Similar to a sand pouring unity ceremony, the couple pours pieces of sand/glass into a container which is then sent off to a glass blowing studio to be formed into a blown-glass sculpture. If you’re in central Iowa, Ciccotti Art Glass will do this for you, and he and his wife are very friendly people.

Paint
For the artistically inclined, or for those who just like a little mess, pour paint on a canvas, or create a live painting during your ceremony. Another fun thing that may be possible depending on your venue is paintballing a canvas.

Plant a Tree/Herbs
Use soil from your hometown and theirs to mix in with the soil you’re planting it in. Another option is planting some easy-to-grow herbs, like basil. Then you can use those herbs in your meals, and you can be reminded of where those herbs came from.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich
Or any other simple sandwich with ingredients that go well together. The bonus of this one is that you get to snack.

Anniversary Box
Put letters to each other in a box with a bottle of your favorite wine or liquor, and maybe take a selfie with an instant camera. On your anniversary, repeat: write new letters, replace the beverage, and take a selfie with an instant camera. As the years go by, you have this collection of letters and photos to reminisce with.

Blending Wine
This one is similar to the sand except you get to drink it. Choosing two different wines that blend well together (just like you and your partner) and pouring it into one container can be an easy, but unique way to symbolize your union.

Feet Washing
If you are having a Christian ceremony, you can demonstrate the love and humility of Jesus by washing each other’s feet.

Volcano
Remember your 5th grade science project? Maybe it wasn’t a volcano, but wouldn’t that be a rad thing to do for a wedding? Maybe you can find some substances more eruptive than baking soda and vinegar that are still safe enough to be used in a wedding.

Communion
Again if you are having a Christian ceremony, simply having a first communion in marriage is a great way to symbolize your union and kick off your marriage. It’s simple and many people already incorporate communion in Christian ceremonies.

Welding
Obviously, you have to know what you’re doing for this one, and if you don’t, maybe there is another way to fuse two metals together with hot things. Bonus: If you’re a die-hard fan of The Office, you can quote Michael, who, at Phyllis and Bob Vance’s (Vance Refrigeration) wedding, said, “Webster’s dictionary defines wedding as the fusing of two metals with a hot torch.” Who doesn’t love a good Office reference?

BONUS: Massage
Weddings can be stressful and unity ceremonies take a minute. Take two minutes and trade your partner a neck, back, hand or foot massage. Brides, if you don’t mind your feet being touched, you may want to opt for this one. Is it weird? Yeah. Unconventional? Absolutely. Is it your wedding and you can do what you want? YEP.

Here’s the thing about unity ceremonies and weddings in general: it’s your wedding. Get creative. Maybe you think unity ceremonies are silly and don’t even want to have one. It’s your wedding; don’t have one. Other people think they are sweet and sacred, in which case, choose one that fits you and your partner. Are you more on the traditional end? Maybe go with a unity candle. Devoutly religious? Choose elements from your religion that represent your union. Are you both rocket scientists? Set off a rocket (but be aware of the airspace and other aircraft, your venue’s rules, and be safe). There are lots of ways to do a unity ceremony, and because it’s your wedding, you can make one up if you don’t like what your research offers you.
